JAMUGURIHAT: National Reading Month is being celebrated across the country from June 19 to July 18. The event has been devised by PN Panicker Foundation, Kerala, a renowned NGO, engaged in the literary movement of India and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and NITI Aayog, Government of India.

As per the instruction of Biswanath district administration and Inspector of Schools, Sonitpur, National Reading Month was also celebrated at Gyan Bharati Public School, Sootea here. The celebration started with a 'Reading Pledge Taking' ceremony on July 1 where the school management, teachers and students participated to take oath for making reading an integral part of knowledge learning process. On the same day, a seminar on the topic 'Reading as a tool of education' was also organized in the school auditorium.

Anjan Baskota, a leading literary person of Sootea and winner of Sahitya Akademi Young Writers Award 2020, graced the occasion as the distinguished speaker. Principal Abhijit Boruah, teachers Iswar Timsina, Atul Borah, Paul Micky Kujur and Chinmoyee Borah also spoke at length on the subject and stressed the importance of reading skill as a part of education. Students also participated on various events like elocution, recitation of poems, extempore speech, story telling, drawing competition etc.

On July 2, events like quiz competitions, word writing competition, essay writing competition, interaction with the authors etc. were held. On July 3, a mass procession was taken out with placards. The procession passed through the villages around the school and strived to enlighten the people about the importance of reading.
