NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa vows to rid Dima Hasao of drugs

HAFLONG: Realising the alarming increase in drug addiction worldwide and also in the Dima Hasao district, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council CEM Debolal Gorlosa, initiated a drug awareness campaign recently.

As a part of this endeavour, under his initiative, a grant programme was organized in presence of Deputy Commissioner Nazreen Ahmed, ACS and Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar, IPS at the N L Daulagupu Sports Complex complex today.

Debolal Gorlosa addressing the issue said, "The entire world is facing the menace of drug and has a devastating impact on the addict, individual, family and a large section of society and it is seen that gradually many of our youth in Dima Hasao are also falling prey to this". Pledging that he will fight this menace, he said there will be zero tolerance toward the suppliers and drug traffickers. Inviting cooperation from the parents, NGOs, various groups, organizations and Apex Bodies he asserted that this threat to society and the nation as a whole can only be fought with their help.

Referring to the prevailing underage alcoholism and smoking problem, he warned the shopkeepers and the liquor shops to abstain from selling cigarettes and alcohol to the underaged boys and girls will be dealt with stern hands and there will be no excuse for forgiveness for such cases. Stating that more than abusers or users it is the drug suppliers and traffickers who are liable for severe actions. Requesting SP to monitor such activities, he requested law and order to be strict to induce fear of such uses.

Debolal Gorlosa said that the campaign should not be limited to parents and families only, it needs large support as a society as a whole. Praising Dr Ronald Bathari for inspiring and working as a part of an NGO to rehabilitate those with such addiction, CEM said they will work together for the larger benefit of the people.

DC Nazreen Ahmed in her speech told that parents at home should keep a vigil on their children's actions so that in case of such temptations a timely check can be done. Admitting this as one of the biggest threats to the growing nation DC said that this issue should be resolved immediately before it is aggravated further.

Newly joined SP Dima Hasao narrated how the fast phase development will be of no meaning if the youth is into such activities. He informed me that very soon a number will be made available in the district for people to connect to them directly in this matter.

Among others who spoke was Dr Ronald Bathari who in his inspiring words gave an indebt about the issues related and how to tackle them. Stating it as a menace, the doctor revealed various terms and how his NGO is working to help those substance use disorders among people. He also disclosed that most of his members are recovering addicts or recovering SUDs (substance use disorder) all set to work for society. Their exemplary service was appreciated by the people present during the meeting.

Other prominent speakers were Executive Member NCHAC i/c Medical Samuel Changsan who in his inspiring words urged all individuals and society to work hand in hand to fight this menace.

Amazed at how a small town like Haflong which is environmentally and culturally rich could also come into the grip of such drug addiction, Chairperson NCHAC, Ranu Langthasa said that this fight should not be an individual's fight but a joint effort for a bright future of the youth of this district

The programme was successfully organized by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council under the initiative of Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa. The programme began with the welcome speech by Principal Secretary (N) Mukut Kemprai and ended with a vote of thanks by Council Additional Secretary H Nriame and the programme was anchored by a local youth Dhriti These.

Those present during the meeting were Executive Member Nipolal Hojoai, Paudaming Nriame and officials from the council and various departments. Teachers, principals, NGOs, leaders of the society, Apex Bodies, the public etc also attended the meeting.
