Online lottery racket busted, four arrested in Sarupathar

SARUPATHAR: On the basis of tip-off, Trinayan Bhuyan, Subdivisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Dhansiri subdivision, and Rubul Medhi, Sub-inspector (SI) of Sarupathar police station, conducted a raid at a betting house in Sarupathar near the fish market and four persons were apprehended.

They have been identified as Ranjit Phukan, son of Gopal Phukan of Sarupathar town, Kankan Borgohain, son of Nareswar Borgohain of Gohain gaon in Sarupathar, Chukapha Handique, son of Prabin Handique, and Aryan Handique, son of Aditya Handique of Tengahola village in Sarupathar. The accused were caught red-handed while running the betting house (online lottery).

Besides this, the items used for running the betting house were seized from the possession of accused persons. These included 6 books used for maintaining records of betting, 3 calculators, 5 mobile handsets and Rs 1270 cash.

The role of the betting house and control room is to allot numbers, declare results and keep record of all betting transactions. Betting through number allotments goes on throughout the day with results coming out every hour. The cash collected by the sellers are generally deposited in the control room in the evening. Under normal circumstances, the day-to-day transaction in the control room is more than Rs 1 lakh a day.
