PWD bridge on Ukium Road under Chaygaon LAC is a deathtrap!

BOKO: Assam State Public Works Department left a deathtrap on the Ukiam Road under Chaygaon LAC unattended. An RCC bridge has been made recently over Drone River between Borjhar and Ukium village. It is to be mentioned that the bridge is the only connecting point between Ukium and National Highway-17. After so many years, people got that bridge replaced by a wooden bridge. But now the bridge has become a deathtrap. The approaching ends of the bridge collapsed. Local people of the Ukium area alleged that the bridge was completed this year only, but within a few months, the bridge has been damaged.

During the last couple of years, the Chhaygaon constituency has seen many new roads and bridges constructed under various packages, mostly under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), which have been allotted to different contractors. But the consistency in the quality of construction of the various projects which have been completed is objectionable. Call it insincerity, laziness or corruption on the part of officials or engineers of PWD Roads, Chhaygaon Circle, or corruption on the part of the contractors, the end result is the same as always- the public has to pay the price for it. Complaints have been made on a regular basis, but PWD officials seldom pay attention to such concerns and complaints.

The above-mentioned RCC bridge measuring a length of 30 meters (package no AS-11-805) at around Rs 2.87 crore was allotted to a contractor.
