SIVASAGAR: International Women’s Day was celebrated at Sibsagar Commerce College on Saturday. It was organized by the Women’s Studies Cell. Convener and Secretary of Women’s Studies Cell Mrinali Mahanta initiated the programme with an introductory speech. The programme was then commenced with a chorus performance by the women faculties of the institution with a melodious yet powerful Assamese song of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, “Ah ah ulai ah Xojag Janata..”. Dr Lakhimi Dutta, HoD of English and Member of Women’s Studies Cell felicitated the esteemed guests present on the occasion.

It was followed by the inaugural ceremony of the event with the lighting of the lamp by the President of the Women’s Studies Cell and Principal of the college, Dr. Saumar Jyoti Mahanta. Mahanta delivered an insightful welcome speech highlighting the importance of Women’s Day and the institution’s commitment to women’s empowerment. 

The chief guest for the Programme was Dr Nirupama Mahanta, a literate and renowned researcher of Sankari Culture. She delivered a very empowering speech on women being a mother, daughter, wife, and yet a multitasker in almost every aspect. She specifically talked about the laws for women. However, laws are constructed, but the internal struggles that a woman faces are often ignored and need to be addressed more. Her success story truly inspired the younger generation.

Other esteemed guests Hironmoyee Gogoi (entrepreneur) and Akansha Baruah (research assistant, RGVN, Guwahati) delivered their speech on the topic “Gender Equality, Education, and Entrepreneurship in Light of Advantage Assam 2.0.”. They highlight the need for collective efforts in advancing women’s education and entrepreneurship in today’s scenario. The programme was also graced by a vibrant dance performance by students. This was followed by a speech by the Vice Principal Bijoy Saikia, Department of Banking. Snehamoyee Saikia and Dr. Pankaj Jyoti Hazarika also graced the event and delivered their thoughtful speech on Women’s Day.
