SIVASAGAR: Alongside the rest of the world, World Environment Day was observed on Thursday with enthusiasm in Sivasagar. Marking the occasion, the Sibsagar Press Club also organized a special event at its premises in Babupatty.

The day’s proceedings began with a cleanliness drive in the morning within the press club premises. This was followed by a meeting to commemorate World Environment Day, which was anchored by Himanshu Neog, Journalist and Acting Secretary of the Press Club.

Dr Utpal Dutta, a prominent educationist and Vice-President of the press club, attended the event as the keynote speaker. In his address, Dr Dutta emphasized the urgent need for public awareness and lifestyle changes in response to rising global temperatures, climate change and the need to protect the future of the planet. He highlighted scientific perspectives on the matter and urged citizens to minimize the use of plastic in their daily lives. Senior journalists MI Bora and Pranjal Rajguru also addressed the gathering, sharing brief yet impactful remarks.

As part of the celebration, the press club distributed a variety of saplings, including fruit-bearing and medicinal plants, free of cost to local residents. The initiative aimed to promote greenery and environmental awareness among the public. The event saw participation from several journalists and well-wishers, including Khairuddin Ahmed, Ratu Kumar Das, Firoz Ahmed among others.
