SILCHAR: Election Commission’s decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Assam would spell doom for the Bengali speaking people in the state, claimed Sushmita Dev, the TMC Rajya Sabha MP. Addressing a press meet, Dev said that the BJP governments, both in the centre as well as in the state, had been playing with the existence of the Bengalis.

“The BJP government’s communal and divisive politics is ruining the Bengali-speaking people in the entire country, and particularly in Assam, the situation is much graver and more serious only because the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is playing a dangerous game with the Bengalis,” Dev said.

To explain her point, the TMC MP said that the state government issued directives towards the district administration and police to withdraw all pending cases in the Foreigners Tribunals against the six communities under the CAA, but the very next day, the Chief Minister claimed that no such decision was taken in the state Cabinet which had only decided to drop foreigners cases against the Gorkhas and the Koch Rajbongshis.

“We welcome the cabinet approval for dropping the foreigner cases against the Gorkhas and the Koch Rajbongshis, but our straight question to the Chief Minister is, why his government excludes the Bengali Hindus from such benefits. After all, the Hindu Bengalis are the main support base of the BJP in Assam,” she argued.

She further said that the BJP first befooled the Bengali Hindus with the CAA, and now they were bringing the SIR to corner the Bengalis, both Hindus and the Muslims to the extreme. She wondered why the government could not garner the courage to publish the NRC and why the Hindus whose names did not figure in the document were not given the chance to prove their citizenship.
