GUWAHATI: Birendra Kr Upadhyay a Sub-inspector (SI) of Guwahati's Srimantapur of Special Task Force has been suspended for insubordination, indiscipline conduct, and dereliction of duty.

The suspension of the SI was notified by the Additional Superintendent of police, Srimantapur.

An order copy undersigned by Additional Superintendent of police, Srimantapur on Thursday said, "As directed, S.I(UB) Birendra Kr. Upadhyay of STF, Assam, Srimantapur, Guwahati is placed under suspension with immediate effect for insubordination, indiscipline conduct and dereliction of duty. During the period of suspension, he will get the subsistence allowances as admissible as per rule if he remains present at Reserve Office, STF, Assam, Srimantapur, Guwahati".

Earlier, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has suspended the Deputy General Manager of the department of instrumentation, Nihar Prasad Sharma, after he was arrested on charges of rape. Sharma was accused of rape by a fellow female employee who claimed that the DGM had spiked her drink after inviting her to his official quarter inside the campus of the Numaligarh Refinery Limited. An FIR was lodged with the Numaligarh police station in the Golaghat district on August 20, 2021. Sharma had been absconding but was later arrested from his residence in Guwahati later that night.

The victim who is an engineer at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) alleged that she was drugged before the DGM made efforts to sexually harass her. Sharma had invited her over on the pretext of regularizing her job. The police launched an operation to arrest Sharma as soon as the FIR was lodged. However, the DGM was found to be missing from his official residence. The Golaghat Police soon arrested him in Guwahati.
