MANGALDAI: The Darrang district administration’s directive to immediately relocate the office of the Inspector of Schools, Darrang to the District Elementary Education Officer’s office faced opposition from various local teachers, employees, and retired teacher-employee organizations. As part of a plan to demolish the old building of Mangaldai Girls’ HS School and construct a new building with approximately Rs 7 crore under RIDF scheme, the District Commissioner, on July 16, issued an order to shift the office of the Inspector of Schools to the District Elementary Education Officer’s office to allow the school’s classes to be conducted in the current premises of the School Inspector’s office building until the new construction is completed.

This directive was opposed by several local teacher and employee organizations, including the Darrang District Provincialized Retired Teachers-Employees Association, District Academic Council, District High School Teachers’ Association, District Secondary Teachers and Employees Association, Combined Teachers’ Forum, District Higher Secondary Subject Teachers and Employees Association, and the Secondary School Office Assistants Association.

In a memorandum submitted to the District Commissioner on Saturday, these organizations expressed their opposition to the office shifting stating that the School Inspector’s office was recently shifted from a rented building to its current location at the Collegiate High School premises. With the cooperation of various local teacher and employee organizations, the dilapidated infrastructure of the previous school premises was renovated during this period.

Additionally, the memorandum highlighted that the District Elementary Education Officer’s office premises, where the shifting was proposed, already housed the office of the District Mission Coordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and that there was no suitable environment to accommodate another district-level office. The memorandum also referenced Resolution No. 2 of the July 8 meeting of the Mangaldai Girls’ Higher Secondary School management committee, requesting the construction of separate temporary infrastructure at the Collegiate High School premises for conducting classes.

Representatives of the applicant organizations informed the media that the District Commissioner had assured consideration of the memorandum’s contents.
