TEZPUR: The Tezpur City Chapter of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on “Obstetric Emergencies – Simulation Based Learning” on the August 9 and August 10, at Tezpur. The event aimed to enhance knowledge, skills, and preparedness in managing critical obstetric situations, with a special focus on simulation-based training. It was more relevant for updating the obstetricians and anaesthesiologists in view of the dismal performance in terms of maternal mortality rate in the state of Assam, which has remained a concern for all public health professionals and workers.

The programme began with the inauguration on 9th evening in the presence of ISA Assam State president Dr Deepankar Sarma. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Archana Deka, president, ISA Tezpur branch, setting the tone for two days of insightful learning and professional exchange. The inaugural session included two lectures by Dr Manokanth Madapu and Dr GL Ravindra, two reputed obstetric anaesthesiologists of the country from Hyderabad and Bangalore respectively. The talk by Dr Manokanth on “Safe transfer of the seriously ill pregnant lady” and by Dr Ravindra on “Managing a Blood Bank in Co-operative model” generated much enthusiasm amongst more than hundred delegates and doctors of the state present in the gathering.

Other resource persons in the two-day programme included Prof Karuna Kumar Das, HOD, Department of Anaesthesiology, Assam Medical College (Dibrugarh), Prof Chandita Konwar, HOD,  and others joined online with her input on the subject.

Over 100 delegates from different parts of Assam and beyond participated enthusiastically, making the CME a highly interactive and collaborative platform. The sessions highlighted the importance of preventing maternal mortality, underlining timely intervention and multidisciplinary teamwork as key strategies.
