Majuli: The ongoing pandemic has changed the way people celebrate various festivals. One of the major attractions of Assam, Raas Festival celebrated in a big way in Majuli and other parts of Assam is held in November every year.

Raas Utsav attracts a large number of tourists across the world. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is uncertain how the festival will be hosted this year.

The district administration of Majuli has held a meeting with more than 50 Raas organising committees to discuss the measures to be taken to organise Raas Utsav in light of the pandemic.

The authorities informed that the COVID-19 protocols would not allow senior citizens and children to take part in the Raas programmes. Many Raas committees have also expressed their inability to organise Raas festival. It would be convenient for them to organise the festival if the government relaxes some COVID-19 protocols.

Raas Utsav is the annual festival of the river island. The festival is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of November every year. The festivities continue for four to five days, where the life of Lord Krishna is presented in various forms of performing art. Raas Leela was first performed in 1840 A.D. in Dakhinpat Sattra of Majuli, and it has continued since then.
