Urus is a festival which is celebrated in Assam, both by the Muslims and Hindus to pay homage to the memories of the great Muslim reformer, Azan Fakir. It is especially celebrated at Ajan Pir Dargah at Sivasagar, the Royal city of Assam. In India, it is this place where people from both the communities i.e. Muslims and Hindus get together and honour the shrine of Ajan Fakir, the great saint.
The Ajan Pir Dargah is located about 22kms away from the Sivasagar region in the Saraguri Chapori. This sacred mausoleum had been established in the memory of a renowned Muslim reformer and saint named Ajan Fakir or Ajan Pir, Hazrat Shah Miran, and Shah Milan. He came to the North-East part of India for the first time from Baghdad in the 17th century. He played a crucial role in binding the people of the Brahmaputra Valley and stabilizing the Islam religion in the state of Assam. He is considered a legendary Sufi saint who composed many Muslim spiritual songs in the Assamese language. Thousands of devotees from all over the country visit this Dargah to pay their homage to this great reformer who had contributed a lot for the people of Assam. This Dargah attracts people of all religions and the spiritual ambience of the place delivers peace and harmony to mind and soul. The complete white structure of the Dargah is quite pleasing to the eyes and the excellent architectural designs used in constructing the holy place are absolutely commendable.
