AGARTALA: In a deeply disturbing incident, a BJP leader from Boxanagar, identified as Robiul Islam, was allegedly caught red-handed attempting to assault a woman under the pretense of a party outreach program.
Islam, a resident of Kalsimura under the Boxanagar constituency, is reportedly a close associate of BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain.
According to sources, the incident took place yesterday afternoon when Islam entered the woman’s house under the guise of conducting a public relations campaign for the party. However, once inside, he allegedly attempted to force himself on the woman. As she resisted and raised an alarm, her cries alerted nearby villagers, who rushed to the scene. Upon witnessing the alleged act, an enraged mob confronted the BJP leader, beat him up, and subsequently handed him over to the police.
Eyewitnesses reported that Islam was severely thrashed by the furious villagers, who condemned the act and demanded strict legal action against him. Many locals expressed their outrage, emphasizing that political leaders should uphold morality and integrity rather than engage in such disgraceful conduct.
This incident has sparked widespread criticism, particularly as it is not an isolated case. In recent weeks, multiple allegations of sexual misconduct have surfaced against BJP leaders in Tripura. At least five similar cases have been reported, raising serious concerns about the behavior of certain party members and the need for accountability within political ranks.
Opposition parties have strongly condemned the incident, calling for stringent action and questioning the BJP’s moral standing. Several political leaders and activists have demanded that the ruling party take responsibility and ensure that individuals with such allegations against them do not hold positions of power.
Following the incident, police authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Legal proceedings will follow based on the victim’s complaint, and further action will be taken accordingly. Meanwhile, the residents of Boxanagar remain in shock and anger, demanding swift justice and urging political parties to take firm measures against offenders.
