Guwahati: Family members of veteran actor of Assam, Mira Biswas (mother of actor Seema Biswas of Bandit Queen fame) donated the body of the actor to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Her eyes were donated to Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya, the eye hospital in Guwahati.

Mira Biswas breathed her last at Down Town Hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday ( January 5) at the age of 78 following cardiac arrest.

Speaking to the media a GMCH doctor said, "Actress's family members informed us today morning that Mira Biswas wanted to donate her body for the medical students. Today Ellora Vigyan Mancha formally handed over the body to us with will showing that they wanted to donate. And as we know Mira Biswas was a famous actress of her time, so it's a privilege for the students of our college as well as for us that we can use her body for our medical students for learning."

Before her demise, Mira Biswas was residing at Beltola in Guwahati. Besides Seema Biswas, she leaves behind a son and three daughters.

Renowned actress Mira Biswas was born in Nalbari on December 31, 1943. She was associated with performing arts since her school days. She had made her debut in the Assamese film Xarapat directed by Anwar Hussain. Her husband Jagadish Chandra Biswas encouraged her to take up acting. Mira Biswas featured in the critically acclaimed film 'Water' (2005) by filmmaker Deepa Mehta. The last film she featured in was Jatin Bora starrer Assamese film Ratnakar. Her acting in plays Kio, Moi Rahmote Koiso, and Emuthi Saul, Siraj is still alive in the hearts of the audience.

Notably, she was recognised as the first artist to be produced from Nalbari. The veteran actress also earned national frame through her acting in 'Water'. She was also awarded the Jivan Silpi Adya Sarma Award.
