TANGLA: In a shocking incident ahead of the BTR council polls that underscored the growing concern over presence of illegal firearms in the Bodo belt, a youth identified as Rebo Boro was shot in the leg by one Golap Kachari at Poskia-Hatibandha village under Kalaigaon police station in Udalguri district on Saturday night.

The incident, reportedly triggered by personal enmity, took a violent turn when Rebo Boro and a group of about five others were sitting by the pond when Golap Kachari of Barakhat suddenly arrived in his four-wheeler and engaged in a heated argument with Rebo Boro. As per sources, the situation escalated quickly when Golap Kachari allegedly drew a pistol from his vehicle and fired two rounds into the air before aiming and shooting directly at Boro’s thigh. The bullet struck Boro, while another individual, Kulen Boro, also sustained injuries during the commotion.

Boro, who was critically injured, was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment. The sound of gunfire alarmed residents, who rushed to the spot and managed to overpower Golap Kachari. He was physically restrained and handed over to Kalaigaon police. Reportedly, police also recovered the illegal firearm from the spot.

Rebo Boro is currently undergoing treatment at GMCH and was reported to be out of danger. The incident sent shockwaves across the area, raising serious questions about the easy availability of illegal arms in interior pockets of Udalguri. Locals demanded Udalguri police for a thorough police crackdown on the circulation of unlicensed firearms to prevent such incidents in the future.
