IMPHAL: In response to decades of requests by students, residents, and historians, the 4th Assam Rifles camp, which had been based on the Manipur University campus, has been moved to the southern side of the Langthabal mountain.

The long-awaited removal of the Assam Rifles camp from the Manipur University campus was finally realized, marking a significant victory for the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) and other stakeholders. The camp, previously located at the Langthabal Old Palace inside the university campus, has been shifted to a site outside the campus, south of the Langthabal hillock.

Karam Shyam, a local MLA, Major General Ravroop Singh (South IGAR), and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh attended the relocation event.

The hillock known as Langthabal is extremely significant both historically and culturally. During the 1820s, it was Maharaja Gambhir Singh's royal palace and the centre of government for the monarchs of Manipur.

In his remarks, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh thanked the Assam Rifles for recognising the community's feelings and returning the facility to public usage. He stated, "The forces tasked with protecting the nation must work in harmony with the local population, fostering mutual respect."

Meanwhile, CM Biren Singh also brought up current state-related events. He brought up the alarming situation of a man from Assam who vanished from the Army base at Leimakhong in Kangpokpi district, citing remarks made by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga about Manipur.
