IMPHAL: Imphal West saw a strong expression of public outrage and solidarity on Wednesday when residents held a sit-in protest against an appalling act of brutality in the Sagolband locality.

The protest was held following a harrowing episode in which unidentified armed men opened fire on an orphanage sheltering orphan boys, and the act left the community outraged and crying out for justice.

Protesters came in huge numbers, each holding placards with messages decrying the attack. The crowd loudly chanted slogans demanding that the authorities act immediately and have the culprits brought to justice.

What they all desired was one thing: the immediate arrest and prosecution of the culprits behind the horror that has shattered the tranquility of a community and left its most vulnerable members cowering in fear.

Based on official police reports, the attack occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday at approximately 1:40 am. At least two unknown gunmen are suspected to have opened fire with six rounds of ammunition on the children's home. Despite no reported casualties, the attack and the sounds of gunfire provided a scene of terror and fear in what should otherwise be a secure environment for children.

Khaiden Ongbi Romita, the manager and caretaker of the orphanage, expressed her emotional reaction in a media interaction. She described the attack as a deep injustice and a cause for worry, describing it as a terrible wrong for a facility that is supposed to give succor and protection to vulnerable children.

Romita emphasized the home's vital mission of providing shelter and care for orphaned boys, and she made a sincere appeal to the authorities for stronger security and steps to avoid such things from happening again in the future.

This house is a haven for children who have already endured unimaginable suffering. They should be given peace, security, and an opportunity to develop in a supportive environment," she stated. Her sentiments were echoed by many in the community who came out to demonstrate their support for the orphanage and call for accountability for the horrific act.
