IMPHAL: Manipur's Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh stated that the state government has begun strong steps against violating the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.

A verification drive conducted by Mayang Imphal Police Station personnel from the Bengoon area showed instances of discrepancies found in the ILP. During the operation, 29 laborers working at a bakery were detected holding labor category ILPs issued in contravention of the Manipur ILP Guidelines, 2019.

The permits were checked by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Imphal West, who confirmed that they were in contravention of the rules. The labor permits were hence canceled, and the detenus were deported to their respective home states. The state government has constituted a high-level committee to prevent such violations and strengthen the ILP system.

Chaired by the Commissioner (Home) and comprising members from UIDAI, Chief Electoral Office, Land Resource Department, and district officers like Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SSP), the committee has been asked to study the present system and present its observations within 15 days so that the lapses can be filled at the earliest.

At a press conference, Chief Minister Singh emphasized the need for strict adherence to the ILP system. He urged applicants and permit holders to ensure their documents were correctly categorized and promptly verified to avoid discrepancies.

Highlighting the importance of the ILP system, he reiterated the government's commitment to preserving the socio-economic and cultural interests of Manipur by maintaining strict compliance with regulations.

The ILP system is governed by the Manipur ILP Guidelines, 2019. It regulates the entry and stay of non-locals in the state. The very purpose is to protect this peculiar cultural and economic environment in the region. The determination of the government in trying to make the system stringent and tight is seen with the formation of a review committee and this recent drive.

By taking swift action and reinforcing oversight mechanisms, the Manipur government aims to enhance administrative efficiency and ensure the ILP system functions effectively. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to better governance and the protection of local interests.
