Manipur: A special court in Manipur has sentenced two drug users and peddlers, Md Tomba (40) and Md Jakiruddin (45), to five years in prison for possession of heroin. The sentence was announced on Friday by Monica Maibam, the judge of the Court of Special Judge Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS).
Both men, residents of Phoubakchao Itha in Bishnupur district, were arrested by a special team from the Narcotics Affairs and Border Police during a drive on November 10, 2014. They were caught with 130 grams of heroin near Ram Lal Paul Higher Secondary School in Imphal West, and their car was also seized.
While Md Tomba received a full five-year sentence, Jakiruddin's sentence was reduced by 250 days, as he had already spent that time in judicial custody during the trial. The court’s decision aims to address the growing drug-related issues in the state.
In a recent move to combat drug trafficking in Manipur, state police detained 15 individuals, including 8 women and 7 men, on January 22 during an operation in the North AOC area.
The operation, based on reliable intelligence, did not uncover any illegal substances, but the detainees were sent to rehabilitation centers for treatment, highlighting a focus on rehabilitation alongside enforcement.
Meanwhile, security forces continued routine search operations and area domination exercises in vulnerable hill and valley districts. Additional measures were taken to secure the safe passage of essential goods along key routes, National Highways 2 and 37. On January 22, 304 vehicles on NH-2 and 233 vehicles on NH-37 were escorted under convoy protection.
To bolster safety, 108 checkpoints have been set up across the state, covering both hills and valleys. Authorities reported no further detentions during the operation, emphasizing their commitment to reducing criminal activity and ensuring public safety.
