Aizawl: The Mizoram Truck Owners' Association (MTOA) and the Mizoram Truck Drivers' Association (MTDA) have called off their strike after the state government began repair work on a damaged section of the Aizawl-Silchar National Highway.
The strike, which started on Thursday morning, had halted the transportation of essential goods and construction materials. Truck operations resumed at 6:30 pm on Friday after the government took action to fix potholes on the Kawnpui-Khamrang stretch, which was in the worst condition.
The Kawnpui-Khamrang/Sairang sector of the Aizawl-Silchar National Highway is severely damaged, causing concern among truck owners and drivers. Those transporting essential goods from outside the state are now hesitant to use the road due to its poor condition, further disrupting transportation and supply chains.
Public Works Department (PWD) officials confirmed that repair work is being done urgently to restore the road's condition and ensure smooth transport. The strike's end allows for the resumption of essential supplies to the region.
Earlier, the Mizoram Truck Owners' Association (MTOA) and the truck drivers' association had halted operations on the Aizawl-Silchar National Highway, protesting the poor condition of the road. Trucks carrying essential goods and construction materials stopped from 7 am, although oil tankers and cooking gas trucks continued operations.
The Aizawl-Silchar road, particularly the Kawnpui-Khamrang/Sairang stretch, was badly damaged during last year’s monsoon and remains unrepaired. The truckers criticized the government for failing to act on promises to repair the road. The strike also received support from other local associations in Kolasib and Kawnpui.
