481 crimes recorded against women reported in Meghalaya

Shillong: The Meghalaya police recorded 481 cases of crimes against women during the year 2018. This is as per the data available in the website of the Meghalaya police till October this year. During this period the cases recorded 67 cases of rape, 85 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty and 17 cases of attempt to commit rape.There were a total of 36 cases kidnapping and abduction of women. Also one case of dowry death was reported in the year. There were 24 reported cases of cruelty by husband or his relatives.

It may be mentioned that in 2017 there were 594 reported cases of crimes against women. It may be pointed out that crimes against women in Meghalaya have seen an upward trend in the last decade. As per record available with the Meghalaya police, the state recorded 172 cases of crimes against women. The number rose up to 208 in 2008.

In 2009 the number of crimes against women went up to 237 and in 2010 and 2011 the number was 261 and 269 respectively. In the year 2012 the reported cases of crimes against women reduced to 255 but in 2013 it touched 343. Subsequently, in the year 2014 there were 388 reported cases; while in 2015 the number reduced to 334 and in 2016 the number of crimes against women again went up to 398.
