Shillong: In a high-alert operation at Polo Bazaar, Shillong, the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) on Friday seized 5 kg and 629 grams of cannabis from a black bag claimed by a 24-year-old man from Nagaland, following a bomb threat scare.

“Today we received info from IC Pasteur BH SI Arki Wahlang that there was a suspected abandoned bag at Polo Bazaar near Matri Mandir,” said theAnti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) official said.   Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the Bomb Disposal Team was summoned and conducted a detailed inspection of the black bag left unattended around 2 pm. Despite the presence of a claimant at the scene —  Nijimu Fithu (24), S/o Tseminyu Fithu, R/o House No. 163, Hermon Colony, Kenuozou Colony, Kohima, Nagaland — the bomb squad continued with necessary protocols “to rule out any potential threat.” The inspection led to the discovery of five packets wrapped in cargo tape and two more covered in poster paper, suspected to contain narcotics. On testing, the contents were confirmed as cannabis. “The same was then tested which gave a positive result for Cannabis and weight of the contraband amounted to 5kg and 629 grams,” the ANTF official confirmed. As the scene intensified, the State ANTF team reached the spot and found that “the suspected was detained by the Pasteur BH.” Independent witnesses were called, and formal authorization was obtained from Inspector Nobin Koch of State ANTF to conduct a body search. “Search was conducted over his body but nothing was found. However, on searching his bag…” the operation yielded the massive haul. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is being registered. The accused will remain in custody as further investigations continue.
