SHILLONG: In a nation battling to eliminate tuberculosis, a 7-year-old girl from Meghalaya has captured hearts and national attention with a gesture of quiet determination that speaks louder than policies and statistics. Abha S Nongrum, a Class 2 student of Little Flower School, has become the youngest Nikshay Mitra in the state—a title under the Government of India’s National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) that is awarded to those who voluntarily support TB patients.

Rather than waiting to grow up to make a difference, Abha chose to act now. Saving portions of her pocket money—whether gifted by parents or relatives—she began purchasing nutrition kits for TB patients across Meghalaya, recognising the importance of healthy food in a patient’s recovery. With hopes of one day meeting these patients personally, she brings not just nutritional support but a rare kind of emotional strength to the battle against TB.

Her efforts caught the attention of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who shared her story on social media and hailed her as a role model. “Meet Meghalaya’s Youngest TB Hero! At just 7, Abha S. Nongrum is the youngest #NikshayMitra from Meghalaya, saving her pocket money to support TB patients with nutrition packs! A Class 2 student, marathon winner, and taekwondo champ, Abha is proof that age is no barrier to making a big impact. We are inspired by you, Abha!”

The young girl’s inspiration stems from compassion that runs deep at home. “Little did she know that her small contribution could be the greatest blessing in someone’s life,” her mother said proudly.

While her classmates are just beginning to learn about the world, Abha has already stood out as a community champion. A silver medallist in taekwondo at the state level and a marathon winner at just five years old, her achievements speak of a discipline that extends far beyond the classroom. But it is her empathy for others that sets her apart in India’s grassroots health movement.
