SHILLONG: In a major step to strengthen passenger safety, the Meghalaya government has made it mandatory for all commercial vehicle drivers across the state to display their personal details on their vehicles. These details will include the driver’s name, contact number, license number, and address.
Tourism Minister and spokesperson of the MDA 2.0 Government, Paul Lyngdoh, announced the decision on Tuesday, following a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. Lyngdoh said the move is aimed at preventing potential criminal activities and enhancing the sense of security among passengers, including both locals and tourists.
“This information will help minimise the chances of criminal activities being carried out using commercial vehicles. It will also boost the sense of safety among travellers visiting Meghalaya,” Lyngdoh stated.
He further warned that commercial vehicles failing to comply with the directive within one month of notification will not be permitted to operate. “We will give one month from the date of notification for all commercial vehicle owners to comply. After that, non-compliant vehicles will not be allowed to operate commercially,” he added.
Authorities have been directed to immediately issue a public notice to ensure widespread awareness and compliance. All commercial vehicle owners will be required to clearly display the driver’s name, license number, contact information, and residential address inside the vehicle.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Lyngdoh said, “The idea is that passengers should know who is driving them. This practice is common in many cities around the world. With the growing number of visitors to Meghalaya, this measure will add a layer of security and reassurance.”
The mandate will apply to all commercial vehicles with passenger permits issued by the Transport Department and will be enforced throughout the state.
