BSF Seizes Cattle-Laden Trucks in East Jaintia Hills

SHILLONG: The BSF, in a bid to curb the menace of cattle smuggling, laid a mobile check post in coordination with local police of Lumshnong police in Sonapur area, East Jaintia Hills district on National Highway-6.

During checking, the BSF said that it seized two trucks carrying 59 cattle heads.

“Desperation on the part of these smugglers is apparent from the daring bids to bypass the mobile check post at Sonapur bridge,” the BSF said.

The BSF also added that joint operation with local police will continue in future to avert the cattle smuggling.

Attempts to smuggle cattle through the Indo-Bangladesh Border along in Meghalaya sector have increased in the recent past, the Border Security Force (BSF) said on Saturday.

“The trucks carrying cattle for smuggling ply on the National Highway in full public spectacle and knowledge,” the BSF alleged.

Cow smuggling to Bangladesh has been going on for decades along the border in Meghalaya with illegal cattle traders from Bangladesh, Assam and Meghalaya making huge profits.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.
