Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma launched the “Shillong-My Passion” campaign here on Saturday. During his speech at the launch, Conrad said, “Don’t allow yourself to be onlookers to the silent ongoing contamination and pollution problems in the city”.

Sangma was categorical in mentioning that the inhabitants of the city are concerned about the dirt, pollution and contamination in the city. “All of us have the same concern but that connect to link ourselves and contribute to the same cause has not been palpable”, he said. He exhorted the gathering that the launch today should be the beginning of a revolution that will go beyond today.

In the presence of government officials, traditional heads and school children, the Chief Minister said, “We have government policies laid down, but all boils down to an individual mindset, ready to adhere or take just another way around”.

In course of his speech, the Chief Minister repeatedly mentioned about the polluted River Umkhrah and River Umshyrpi which he felt as ‘reversible’ through the co-ordinate efforts of the stakeholders.

Interestingly, as he scientifically spoke about the toxic emissions by vehicles, Conrad explicitly asked the officials and the urban populace to think of ‘pool vehicles’. “You can contribute to the overall concern that we have in common” , Sangma stated, adding, “these are small little ways that we can contribute to diminish the concern.” The Chief Minister said that he walks down to office every Wednesday to set an example.

Moreover, the Chief Minister also said that the cement companies and industrial houses in the State should also take similar overtures, with words like “Lets make it viral in our attempt to clean Shillong and any other towns of the State”.
