SHILLONG: Reacting to Congress MP from Shillong, Vincent H Pala's comments that the United Democratic Party (UDP) had only 6 MLAs in 2018, UDP general secretary Dr. Jemino Mawthoh on Sunday stated that he could not understand why everyone was going hammer and tongs against his party.

"Pala has now come to state politics, so he has to make some kind of impression that he can take the Congress forward but it remains to be seen how the public will respond to his comments. Perhaps, it is the fear that UDP will emerge strong in 2023 as people in Khasi and Jaintia Hills have lost faith in the national parties," Jemino Mawthoh said.

He said that the Congress had ruled the State for a maximum period compared to others and all the ills and problems faced by the State today were inherited from the Congress, be it illegal coal mining, border skirmishes, failure in education sector, youth unrest, unemployment, farmers' plight, high infant mortality rate, poor investment in tourism sector and so on.

"The Congress has never genuinely addressed the issues of safeguarding the interest of the indigenous people and protection of the minorities in the State. Congress has always been ruling and they are not used to being in the opposition," he said.

He said the Congress was desperate to topple the government and that was why they were firing salvo at the UDP to withdraw support to this Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
