SHILLONG: The home of a former village headman was set on fire by miscreants in rural Meghalaya. The incident took place on Wednesday in the East Jaintia Hills district of the state of Meghalaya.

According to reports, the incident of arson took place at around 10:30 PM on Wednesday when miscreants set fire to the home of a former headman. The incident took place at the home of the former village chief of the Rymbai Iawpynsin village of the district. The intent of the attack is speculated to be damage to the property of the person.

The local people caught one of the culprits red-handed while committing the crime. While several others managed to flee by taking advantage of the darkness mentioned the Superintendent of Police for the East Jaintia Hills, Jagpal Singh.

A case was registered immediately with the local police station and the investigation was started. The case was filed in the Khliehrait Police Station by the owner of the property. This led to the apprehension of an employee with the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited. This person was responsible fo the tripping of the power lines near the location of the incident. Which lead to the loss of power at the house of the former village chief at the time of the incident.

"So far we have arrested 13 people and that included 3 persons who were employees of the MeECL for their involvement in the crime," the Superintendent of Police in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya mentioned.

Jagpal Singh mentioned that the police were still investigating the matter and looking into the circumstances leading to the crime of arson being committed by the people in question. He added that more details regarding the incident will be revealed once the case is solved.
