Governor Tathagata Roy emphasized on use of geospatial technology

Shillong: Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy strongly emphasized on the use of geospatial technology and applications for governance and other forms of development. The Governor was speaking at the inaugural function of the national symposium on “Innovations in Geospatial Technology for Sustainable Development with Special Emphasis on the North-east” held at the NEHU convention center here on Wednesday.

In his inaugural address, the Governor stressed on the innovations of space technology and geospatial technologies as a means to address issues and challenges of the North-east and to enable it push for development.

Alluding to the Prime Minister’s recent exhortation on the different ministries, agencies and State Government to use space technology, Roy stated, “Use of technology in the Northeast assume significance in view of the logistical difficulties and hindrance on ground observation due to the topographical variations”, even as he exhorted the assembled scientists to give more focus to this aspect that is related to governance and development.

Moreover, the Governor also referred to the huge traffic congestion in Shillong city which is no different from New Delhi. “In New Delhi, you could see the smog but here the topography and blowing winds averted the city from seeing the same”, Roy stated.

Vice-Chancellor of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) Prof SK Srivastava appreciated the scientist who are using the state of art technology. “You are using state-of-the-art technology to get out of the laboratory to go up and down.”

Earlier the chairman of the organizing committee PLN Raju asked the delegates to harness space technology for the development and prosperity of the Northeast. The symposium witnessed around 300 participants from the diverse geospatial background from across the country.
