Shillong: Despite the BJP’s prolonged presence in Meghalaya, the party has struggled to gain a firm foothold in the political landscape of the hill state. Even after years of sustained efforts, the saffron party has not managed to move beyond two Assembly seats — a reality that continues to raise questions about its connection with the electorate.
Amidst this slow progress, senior BJP legislator and former minister AL Hek remains undeterred. Radiating confidence in the party’s future, Hek expressed hope for a revival, grounding his optimism in both democratic values and spiritual conviction.
When asked about the BJP’s stagnant seat count, Hek offered a candid reflection on the will of the people. “We cannot do anything if people do not elect the BJP,” he remarked, underscoring the democratic fabric that ultimately determines electoral outcomes.
Yet, beneath this calm acceptance lies an unshaken belief in resurgence. With deep emotional resonance, Hek invoked the timeless words of Swami Vivekananda: “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.” This quote, he said, continues to guide his political journey and fuels his commitment to see the party grow in Meghalaya.
Hek’s sentiments come at a time when the BJP is looking to recalibrate its strategy in the Northeast, attempting to bridge the cultural and political divide that often alienates national parties from regional sentiments. As Meghalaya’s political mood remains fluid, Hek’s call is not just a reminder of ideological perseverance — it is also an emotional appeal to both cadres and citizens to stay the course in pursuit of a stronger BJP footprint in the state.
