SHILLONG: A long-cherished dream of the residents of Rani Bari, located near the Assam-Meghalaya border, finally became a reality today with the inauguration of the Rani Bari Health Sub Centre. The centre was formally inaugurated by Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun, fulfilling a major promise he had made to the people during the 2018 elections.
The new health facility is a significant development for over a dozen remote villages in the border area, which had long suffered from the lack of basic medical services. Until now, residents had to travel long distances to seek treatment in health centres located in Warmawsaw, Patharkhmah, or even across the border in Assam.
Speaking at the inaugural function, MLA Sohtun expressed deep personal satisfaction and public joy at the launch of the facility. “I am happy to have established a Sub Centre close to the Assam border,” he said, adding, “It was one of my major promises to the people during the 2018 elections, and I am proud to have kept my word.”
The Rani Bari Health Sub Centre will be managed by the Carona Trust and will operate under the supervision of the Jirang Block, ensuring regular and accessible healthcare services for the region. The centre is expected to significantly reduce the healthcare burden for the local population.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of several dignitaries including B. Ranee, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, who attended as Guest of Honour. Also present were A.R. Marak, District Medical and Health Officer; Dr. K. Lyngdoh of Patharkhmah CHC; representatives of Carona Trust; local headmen; and a large number of enthusiastic villagers. MLA Sohtun also used the occasion to thank the government and applauded Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for his commitment to development, stating that initiatives like these have greatly benefitted the people of Meghalaya, particularly in the Jirang Constituency.
Concluding his speech, Sohtun emphasized the significance of the new facility’s location, stating, “Establishing this Sub Centre right at the Assam border stands as a visible testament that this area belongs to the state of Meghalaya.”
