SHILLONG: "I know the Congress well... Hence, I chose the Congress," stressed former Meghalaya Minister, R. G. Lyngdoh on Wednesday also revealed that in the past various regional parties of the State had requested him to join them, while some others suggested that he should form a new political party.

Pointing out that he did try to unify the regional parties, R. G. Lyngdoh Lyngdoh added that the efforts failed to bear fruits for various reasons. He stated that he did not take up the offer to join them because "they were living in the past". Stating that he doubted "their capability to deliver", Lyngdoh added that he is comfortable with the Congress.

He also said that he does not want to join the National People's Party (NPP) "since it is taking the State in a wrong direction".

Lyngdoh also said that he does not want to join the BJP because its ideology is a little suspect."Unity in diversity makes our country strong," he added.

Lyngdoh also said that one of the factors for his rejoining the Congress is his faith in the newly appointed president of MPCC (Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee), Vincent H. Pala.

"Pala stretched out his hand requesting me to rejoin."

He, however stated that the major reason for coming back to the Congress was that on various occasions, elders and youths of the society met him expressing their concern at the current situation of affairs.

On the killing of former HNLC leader, Cherish S Thangkhiew, he said that the State government committed blunders by ordering the arrest of the HNLC leader in the middle of the night and also his killing.

It may be mentioned that Lyngdoh is rejoining the Congress after he had taken a sabbatical in 2008. He represented the then Laitumkhrah constituency for two consecutive terms.

He first won in 1998 and later went on to become the State's Home Minister.
