SHILLONG: The 'International Youth Day-2021' was virtually held from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on August 12. The online mode programme was jointly organized by the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong; the Department of Geology, NEHU, Shillong; and the Shillong Chapter of ISCA (Indian Science Congress Association), Kolkata.

On the occasion, an online quiz competition was also organized from 15:30 hours onwards on August 12. The programme started with the rendition of the 'National Anthem'.

It was followed by a deliberation on the importance of the 'International Youth Day-2021' in the present-day context by Rtn Krishna Das Gupta.

The inaugural session of the programme was presided over by the president of the 'Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong' -- Rtn Monica Chanda. "Young people embody the potential of a society and play a crucial role as key architects of the future of their communities, families and countries. The young people are also on the frontlines of political and social change," said Rtn Monica Chanda in her welcome address.

Prof. (Dr) Devesh Walia, convener of the Shillong Chapter of the Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata & Head of the Department of Geology, NEHU, Shillong, while giving his inaugural address to the august gathering highlighted the importance of organisations like the Rotary Club, the Indian Science Congress Association and the North- Eastern Hill University in guiding the youths.

Prof. (Dr) Devesh Walia said that youth are essential leaders and partners in finding solutions to the issues faced by people in the world today. They must be fully engaged in social development and supported in this work by their societies.

To that effect, quiz competitions like today's programme are an excellent medium with which the youths can be educated and made more confident for the benefit of all as they are the future of this great young nation, he added..

The quiz competition was conducted by Dr Shikhar Kumar and Rtn Vivek Kumar among more than 250 registered participants from all over the country; and, the results were declared in the valedictory session by the dignitaries.

The quiz focussed on making the participants aware about Covid and also an attempt to break the 'vaccination hesitancy mode' among the public. It also underlined various aspects of the State as well as of the 75 years of India's Independence.

Rtn Monica Chanda wished the very best to all the participants for their future endeavours while congratulating thinners and conveyed greater motivation and energy to all youth of this country so that they can help improve our nation and society.

In his valedictory address, Prof. Devesh Walia said that it is critical that the policymakers of our country and the world develop and implement effective policies in the interest of young people, sustainable development and peace and asked the participants to come up for covid vaccination by breaking the chain of vaccination hesitancy.

The students must believe in themselves and take small steps to fulfil their dreams with time management as is the lesson through such quiz competition. The certificate to the winners and participants were awarded using the online mode, stated a press release.
