
JOWAI: The 6th Meghalaya Games kicked off with great enthusiasm at the Wahiajer Multi-Sports Complex Stadium in Jowai, drawing over 15,000 athletes and spectators.
The event began with an inspiring speech by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who emphasized the role of sports in shaping the character and future of Meghalaya’s youth.
"It's not just about winning; it’s about becoming a better person, participating fully, and cherishing these moments, it's about building character, as they will remain forever with you." he said. While competition matters, Sangma encouraged athletes to enjoy the sport itself.
"By rotating the venues, we ensure that every district can host the games and benefit from the development that comes with it," he added. He also spoke about the significant infrastructure development in Jowai and nearby areas due to the event.
He advised athletes to see both victory and defeat as opportunities for growth. "Sports are about discipline, hard work, accepting defeat, learning from it, and improving your skills," he said. "Youth is central to our policy-making. The schemes for the Meghalaya Games, along with the previous editions, show our commitment to their development," he added.
He also explained that hosting such events helps nurture young talent and improve their skills. In his speech, the Chief Minister highlighted the state government’s strong commitment to prioritizing the youth.
