SHILLONG: In a chilling pre-dawn assault near the India–Bangladesh border, a gang of armed miscreants—allegedly from Bangladesh—attacked and stabbed a local resident in South West Khasi Hills district, sparking fears of an organized cross-border criminal operation.
According to police sources, at around 1 a.m., on Friday, a group of about nine Bangladeshi nationals, armed with weapons including a firearm, illegally crossed into Meghalaya through Rongdongai village in the Nongjri–Nonghyllam sector. The victim, identified as Balsrang A. Marak, was reportedly attacked and stabbed when he tried to obstruct their movement.
The attackers fled immediately after the assault, but investigators believe they have not yet crossed back into Bangladesh. Villagers later reported seeing some of the men in the area, unaware at the time that they could be part of the armed group.
In a startling development, police recovered an identity card belonging to the Bangladesh police from the crime scene, along with Bangladeshi currency. The discovery has raised suspicions that the gang may have links to or backing from Bangladeshi law enforcement personnel.
Police suspect the group entered Meghalaya with the intention of abducting locals for ransom, citing the sophisticated equipment they carried, including a gun, walkie-talkies, and chargers. Several abandoned items, including the Bangladesh police ID and currency, have been seized as evidence.
