SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meghalaya has welcomed the state government’s recent initiative to relocate street vendors from the congested Khyndailad area to the top floor of the MUDA Parking Lot, describing it as “proactive, thoughtful and innovative.”

State General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna, the BJP stated, “The recent decision to relocate hawkers from the Khyndailad area, which has been bursting at the seams, to the designated top floor of MUDA Parking Lot demonstrates the government’s sensitivity to both the hawker’s need to earn a living and the general public’s ease of movement.”

The party hailed the move as a significant milestone that balances the rights of street vendors with the city’s need for improved traffic flow and pedestrian convenience. “This milestone decision reflects the state government’s commitment to inclusive governance and responsible urban planning, aimed at making Shillong a more habitable city,” the statement noted.

The BJP leader emphasized that the relocation plan not only addresses the problem of overcrowding but also ensures vendors operate in a more “secure, comfortable and dignified” environment.

However, Pohshna, drew attention to a similar issue that continues to affect Laitumkhrah, urging the government to extend the same level of attention and resolution. “Daily commuters and residents have long expressed distress over congestion along the Laitumkhrah main road stretching to the Fire Brigade junction, where unregulated street vending has increasingly hampered mobility and as a direct consequence, public safety stands compromised,” Pohshna said.
