NEW DELHI: A delegation from the Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by MLA Sanbor Shullai, State President Rikman G Momin, and State Vice President Bernard Marak, recently met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the acquisition of Defence Ministry-controlled land in Shillong to help ease the city's growing traffic congestion.
Important areas controlled by the Defence Ministry, like Lady Keane Road, Shillong Peak Road, Umpling Bridge Road, and the footpath near Anjali Cinema Hall, were identified as possible places for public use, as long as proper boundaries and fences are put in place.
Shullai suggested turning Defence land near Umsohsun into a parking lot to ease traffic in Khyndailad. He also proposed using land near Anjali Cantonment Beat House for parking and a market for hawkers. He mentioned that the land could be acquired using the Defence Ministry's compensation rules.
The Union Defence Minister told the delegation that he would look into the matter, and the BJP state unit promised to keep working on it. The delegation also expressed concerns about the fencing near Rhino Point, which made the minister ask for a detailed report on the problems faced by civilians.
In addition, the BJP leaders plan to meet the Chief Minister of Meghalaya to push for the formation of a state-level committee to manage the acquisition of Defence land in Shillong.
