Meghalaya: Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai hits out at AL Hek

Shillong: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai clarified reports that he interrupted Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party (UDP) president, Metbah Lyngdoh while he was speaking when NDA Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu came to the state on the issue of atrocities against Christians in the country.

"I will personally speak with the CM and Speaker with regards to it after my return from Kolkata and shall extend my apology in case it has caused any kind of distress to anyone at the meet," Shullai said.

He also came down heavily on AL Hek by stating that the issue has been blown out of proportion and it came as a rude shock to him as his own party colleague tried to get some political mileage out of it.

"I personally condemn the statement made by A.L. Hek and demand for timely action to be initiated by our party state president as he seems to be completely endorsing the statement against the BJP party," Shullai said.

The South Shillong MLA also said that the incident which happened behind closed doors has gone on to become public.

On the issue of atrocities against Christians, raised by UDP leader Shullai said that he personally feels that the BJP cannot be held responsible for it besides it was not the right platform to bring up such a topic.

He said that the NDA presidential candidate came to seek support and raising other topics at the meet was completely out of line and not the need of the hour.

"Had the issue raised been pertaining to our state, the BJP Meghalaya and I, for certain would collectively stand for it," Shullai added.

He also said that he has no hidden agendas nor does he shy away from issues that are of prime concern especially when it comes to the state and its people.
