Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang is optimistic about resolving the crisis at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) as he plans to meet senior central government officials in charge of higher education on January 13.

This meeting with the Secretary and Additional Secretary of Higher Education aims to address the ongoing issues that have disrupted the university in recent months.

Wahlang intends to brief the newly appointed Secretary on the situation and propose measures to address the challenges faced by NEHU.

The crisis stems from allegations of irregularities and administrative lapses under Vice-Chancellor Prof. PS Shukla’s leadership. These issues have sparked protests led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), both demanding the Vice-Chancellor’s removal.

The unrest has significantly impacted campus activities, prompting calls for urgent action.

In response to these developments, the Ministry of Education has formed a two-member committee to investigate the allegations. The committee's findings, coupled with Wahlang’s discussions with central officials, are expected to play a crucial role in resolving the situation.

The NEHU community has raised concerns about the university’s autonomy and credibility, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to restore normalcy and address their grievances.

Recently, NEHUSU students and KSU’s NEHU unit members removed Registrar Colonel (Retd) Omkar Singh from the NEHU campus on Monday, locking the administrative block entrance.

The action followed Singh’s unannounced return to the campus and resumption of office duties. Students confronted him at his quarters, where he was reportedly organizing files and documents, leading to the escalation and subsequent removal.
