Shillong:  In a significant boost to the state’s healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday handed over a cheque of Rs 1 crore to Nazareth Hospital, Shillong—marking the first installment of a Rs 2 crore financial grant. The initiative is in line with the Meghalaya government’s ongoing policy to support non-profit hospitals, particularly those catering to underprivileged and marginalized communities.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the health sector, the Chief Minister stated, “Meghalaya has the highest budgetary allocation in the health sector compared to any other state in the country, a large amount of the budget which is used for improving the infrastructure.”

He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the government and private institutions. “Our goals are ultimately the same—that is to provide quality, efficient and affordable healthcare to the people and this is where we can partner with different hospitals,” he said, while elaborating on the genesis and conceptualization of the Meghalaya Health Advancement Policy.

Acknowledging the tireless work of healthcare workers, Sangma urged them to persist in their service with “passion, dedication and compassion,” and underscored the importance of inter-hospital communication to “improve overall patient outcomes” and enable “collaboration among healthcare professionals.”

Nazareth Hospital Administrator Sr Noreen, while expressing gratitude to the state government for the grant, said the funds would be crucial for acquiring lifesaving equipment and ventilators for the Emergency Trauma Unit, Maternity Care, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She also noted that part of the grant would support the upcoming College of Nursing, which is set to accommodate 100 students per year.
