SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the new Rural Health Centre (RHC) at Myriaw in the East West Khasi Hills district, bringing a major step forward in the health setup of the state in its rural areas.

The RHC caters to 21 villages and was funded by Rs. 38.8 lakh from the Chief Minister's Special Development Fund, in addition to another Rs. 38 lakh in its budget for development.

Speaking on the inauguration day, CM Sangma spoke on the issues that Meghalaya's health sector still faces and reminded the people of the government's commitment to providing better healthcare with infrastructure development. He said, "Health care accessibility for rural populations has significantly improved over the last seven years with the state allotting 9% of its budget to health, which he claimed was the highest in the country."

The Myriaw RHC would be managed by the Dr. H G Roberts Hospital in Shillong. That would make the fourth RHC operated by the hospital in the state. The chief minister reminded that health improvement requires collective cooperation among the government, the local community, and such organisations as the Dr. H G Roberts Hospital.

CM Sangma stated that he would upgrade the infrastructure at their Shillong facility to provide Laser Lithotripsy services as a gesture of recognition of the contributions of the hospital.
