SHILLONG: In a significant step towards transforming Meghalaya’s agro-processing sector, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has laid the foundation stone for an Rs 7.18 crore Fruit Dehydration Unit at Songsak in East Garo Hills.

“This facility is being developed under a Community Public-Private Partnership (CPPP) model and is funded through the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), Government of Meghalaya,” the Chief Minister announced during the ceremony.

The high-capacity unit will be managed by ABRI FPO Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd. With the ability to process 7,400 metric tonnes of fresh fruits annually, it is projected to produce 886 metric tonnes of dehydrated fruit products each year. Describing the initiative as a transformative investment in the agricultural value chain, the Chief Minister emphasized its potential to empower local farmers and producer groups. “It will add value to their produce, open up new market opportunities, and help position Meghalaya as a hub for fruit-based agro-industries,” he said.

The project is expected to significantly boost rural livelihoods and drive economic growth in the region.
