
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently coordinated a large scale operation to dispose of narcotics and psychotropic substances amounting to Rs. 53.86 crore. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to combat the drug menace in the state, in alignment with the newly established High-Level and District-Level Drug Disposal Committees by the Meghalaya Police.
This operation was carried out in the Star Cement Ltd. located at Lumshnong in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills District. It is a step towards trying to curb the illegal drug trade in the region.
The incinerated drugs contained a mix of narcotic and psychotropic substances that were taken by the police in different operations. CM Sangma stated, “This activity is directed towards ensuring the future free from the scourge of drugs.”
Meanwhile, a significant quantity of seized drugs had been destroyed today in Baghora in the presence of the Drugs Disposal Committee. The destroyed items included 1981.8 grams of heroin, 14.44 grams of brown sugar, 238.398 kilograms of cannabis, 244 bottles of cough syrup, and 335 tablets. The total value of the seized drugs was estimated at Rs. 5.21 crore.
The destruction had been carried out as part of an ongoing anti-narcotics operation to combat drug trafficking and ensure that seized narcotics did not enter the market.
