Shillong: Two senior officials from the Ministry of Education are scheduled to visit the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday evening to assess the current state of affairs at the central university, amid continuing concerns over alleged administrative lapses. In a communication issued on Wednesday, Under Secretary to the Government of India, D.K. Himanshu stated, “Additional Secretary in-charge Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Sunil Kumar Barnwal and Director Subrat Kumar Pradhan will be visiting the North Eastern Hill University on May 22, to review the functioning of the university.” The letter, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, also noted that the State government has been requested to provide appropriate protocol and security arrangements during the officials’ visit. The development comes in the backdrop of mounting pressure on the university administration, following a series of protests led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and supported by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU–NEHU Unit). The student bodies had launched an indefinite hunger strike in November last year, demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.S. Shukla, along with the registrar and deputy registrar, alleging institutional mismanagement and failure in governance.
