Meghalaya: First Budget Session Under MDA 2.0 Begins Today

SHILLONG: The first budget session of the newly elected Meghalaya assembly begins on Monday at the temporary assembly house in Rilbong in Shillong. Multiple new legislatures are expected to be tabled during this session as the Governor of the state Phagy Chauhan addresses the opening session.

Conrad K Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, who has kept the Finance portfolio with him, will be presenting the budget in the house. The Meghalaya assembly is expected to debate on the governor’s speech on Tuesday and the state budget for the financial year 2023-24 is scheduled to be tabled on March 23. The budget session of the assembly is expected to run from March 20 to March 28. With five days reserved for government businesses and two days for private members’ businesses. The deputy speaker of the house is also expected to be elected during this session.

Thomas A Sangma, the newly elected speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly will be conducting the affairs of the budget session. He had called for a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee and inspected the under-construction Meghayalaya Legislative Assembly building in the Mawdiangdiang locality of Shillong. “The BAC has decided to have a full budget session starting from March 20 till 28. Government officials need to clear all the pending financial issues,” he had mentioned on March 13.

Conrad K Sagma who was recently sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term had visited New Delhi ahead of the first budget session of his second term where he met with several key leaders including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Home MIninster Amit Shah.

“As MDA 2.0 resumes office for the 2nd term, we look forward to her continued guidance and the ministry’s support to further development in Meghalaya,” Conrad K Sangma tweeted after the meetings.
