KHARKHUTA: To boost tourism, the Meghalaya government has now introduced paragliding for tourist attractions. Notably, Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin has initiated the paragliding activity in its famous picnic cum tourist spot in Rong'ma Gitil located in Kharkhuta, North Garo Hills.

Further, a paraglider team led by Bishnu Chetry from Nepal has started paragliding in the Kharkutta area. It is to be mentioned that Kharkhuta is only 100kms from Guwahati City.

Through NH 17, to enter in Kharkutta, the main way is from Darrangiri, Goalpara District, which is around 5 kilometres.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Bishnu Chetry, head of the paragliding team said that he and his team till now have flown more than 50 times and assured that the taking off and the landing site to be very safe.

Rupert Momin, MLA of Kharkhuta Constituency said, "Kharkhuta village offers picturesque natural beauty such as waterfall and cave. So we are on a way to start a circuit tourist and a resort. And with such natural beauty, we are also trying to add an event such as paragliding which will attract the tourist more. This is just the beginning; therefore, we have not provided any advertisement."

"Tourism is the fastest growing industry and contributes a great deal to the economy. So we hope with the beginning of this tourist place it will benefit the youth especially in having employment opportunities. Together with them and with the help of chief minister of Meghalaya and tourist department we are trying to develop more in future," the MLA added.

Further, a visitor from Assam said that this is a very good initiative for the adventure-loving tourist.

"Earlier, if you like paragliding then you have to go to Darjeeling, Sikkim or other places. But not we can fly in the sky in a very nearby place and Kharkutta is a very beautiful area with hills, green trees and streams," the visitor added.
