Meghalaya invests Rs 3000 cr to empower youth through education, sports and entrepreneurship

Shillong: Reinforcing his government's commitment to youth-centric development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed building of Dalu Government Higher Secondary School in West Garo Hills, constructed under Mission Education Phase I, a flagship initiative launched in 2021.

“Close to Rs 3000 crore has been invested in education, sports and entrepreneurship through various government programmes including CM Elevate and PRIME,” the Chief Minister announced, underlining the scale of investment being made to create opportunities and infrastructure for the youth. “Our focus has been on holistic education and in the last few years, we have ensured renovation, revamp and new building constructions for all government LP Schools, Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools,” he said.

Highlighting his administration’s continued thrust on inclusive growth, Sangma said, “The Government has remained committed to ensure overall upgrade in infrastructure for educational institutes and new college infrastructure, including opening of new colleges were initiated by the government.”

He further added, “Captain Williamson Sangma State University, the first state university, is testimony of our government’s commitment to accord priority in education sector.”

Emphasizing the government’s focus on channelizing the energy of the youth into productive avenues, Sangma said, “We are building robust sports infrastructures across the State. In the run up to National Games to be held in our state, we are preparing a plan to promote our sportspersons.”

He continued, “Next week, we are calling all sports associations to discuss interventions to support and finance our sportspersons preparing for national games.”

Defending Meghalaya’s selection as the host for the upcoming National Games, he remarked, “Meghalaya was awarded to host National Games because IOA is aware of our state’s preparedness and capacity.”

He also pointed to other youth-focused initiatives such as the implementation of smart classrooms and tech-enabled learning in schools, in addition to entrepreneurial schemes under MGMP, CM Elevate and PRIME.

“Our youth are our asset and we are doing our best to showcase, groom our talents, be it music or sports,” the Chief Minister said. During his visit to the region, Sangma also inaugurated the Dalu Immigration Check Post and a newly constructed Rs 11 crore bridge over the Bakla River, replacing the one destroyed during the 2023 floods.
