JOWAI: A massive Black Flag Rally was conducted by the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) on Thursday to voice their dissent against the proposed railway project in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills region.

The protesters marched through the streets, carrying banners like “We Reject Railway” and “Jaiñtia Rejects Railway,” sending a clear message that the government’s railway expansion plans is not accepted by them.

The project was vehemently opposed by the JNC, particularly after the railway initiative failed in Ri Bhoi district.

The organization criticized the state government for not paying heed to their long-standing memorandum against the railway project.

They re-affirmed that the people of Jaiñtia Hills will oppose the railway expansion plans unless the government enforces a robust mechanism to control the influx of outsiders.

The possibility of unchecked migration alarmed protesters, who feared it would threaten the region's cultural and demographic dynamics. They underlined that the gathering showed their unwavering dedication to defending their land and traditions.

In response to the growing concerns, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the state government would soon hold a meeting with political parties and stakeholders to address issues related to the railway project and prevent illegal immigration into the state.
