Meghalaya launches ‘Tracing the Roots’ to safeguard indigenous heritage through multidisciplinary research

SHILLONG: In a significant step towards preserving Meghalaya's rich indigenous legacy through scientific inquiry and academic research, the State Government is advancing 'Tracing the Roots', an ambitious interdisciplinary initiative aimed at documenting the history, language, culture, heritage and historical development of the State's indigenous communities. The project will combine historical research with oral traditions, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, linguistics, archaeology, ethnography and contemporary scientific methods, including genetic studies where appropriate, to build an evidence-based understanding of Meghalaya's past. It also envisages the creation of comprehensive digital archives and public engagement platforms while fostering collaborations with leading national and international academic institutions.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the progress of the initiative during a meeting with the committee constituted to guide the research and held detailed discussions on the roadmap for its implementation.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Arts and Culture, seeks to adopt a multidisciplinary approach by integrating historical research, oral traditions, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, linguistics, archaeology, ethnography and contemporary scientific methods, including genetic studies where appropriate, to critically examine theories relating to the origins and historical movements of Meghalaya's indigenous communities.

The project will also document customary institutions, festivals, material culture and language vitality while creating enduring digital archives to preserve knowledge for future generations.

As part of the initiative, the department has developed dedicated digital platforms to document the progress of the research, preserve knowledge resources and facilitate public engagement throughout the project.

During the review, Conrad K. Sangma said, "The initiative aims to build a robust, evidence-based understanding of Meghalaya's indigenous heritage while preserving invaluable oral histories and cultural traditions."

Officials said preparatory work has been underway since February, including the constitution of research teams and the development of the project framework.

They added that the initiative will involve collaborations with leading national and international academic institutions to undertake comparative historical, linguistic and cultural studies while producing scholarly publications, educational resources and comprehensive digital repositories.

The 'Tracing the Roots' initiative seeks to preserve Meghalaya's rich indigenous heritage through rigorous academic research, strengthen cultural identity and create a lasting repository of knowledge for scholars, policymakers and future generations.
