SHILLONG: Oranges and mandarins from the state of Meghalaya are very popular in the Northeastern region of the state and often have more demand than supply. This year, a consignment of these fruits has been exported to Dubai.

Trial shipments of Khasi Mandarin sent to Dubai by the Department of Horticulture, GoM under #MOVCDNER scheme in collaboration with @APEDADOC from Jirang FPC.More power to our farmers!" he tweeted.

Meghalaya's Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare collaborated with the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industries to make this step possible. And the export was implemented by APEDA.

The Khasi Mandarin has a Geographical Identifier tagged agricultural product. The lot was locally sourced and sorted to promote the product in the international markets by the Jirang-based Farmer Producer Company located in the Ri Bhoi district of the state. These fruits were cultivated under the Mission of Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region. This was a sub-project under the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture.

S Sidhu, the Agriculture Secretary for the Government of Meghalaya flagged of the consignment. APEDA chairman M Angamuthu was present for the event via virtual means. His speech stressed the importance of making the Northeast region a hub of organic products and how it will help to boost the economy of the state and the region.

"It's a fact that the North Eastern Region is a leader in organic products. The time is apt to promote Meghalaya's purest form of organic oranges in the country as well as across the globe. So, let us work together and promote horticulture, value-added organic products and other products of Meghalaya," mentioned the APEDA Chairman.
